Make critical assets visible first
Municipal water and sanitation teams are often asked to restore service under time pressure. The most useful starting point is a ranked list of assets where failure has the highest consequence: raw-water intakes, boreholes, boosters, treatment-process pumps, wastewater pumps, sewage stations, electrical panels and essential valves.
For each asset, record its actual operating duty, condition, recent faults, standby arrangement, electrical supply, available spares and access limitations. This creates a defensible order for maintenance and rehabilitation work instead of reacting only to the latest breakdown.
- Identify duty and standby equipment for each critical service.
- Check isolation, non-return valves, pipework and controls with the pump—not separately.
- Confirm that lifting, electrical isolation and safe access are available before work is planned.
- Keep drawings, manuals, curves and commissioning records with the asset history.
Use the fault pattern to decide repair, upgrade or replacement
A recurring trip, seal failure, blockage or weak pressure is evidence—not simply a reason to order the same equipment again. Compare the fault history with the actual duty, the liquid or solids being handled, the control settings and the condition of the surrounding system. The right answer may be a repair, wear-part replacement, control correction, hydraulic adjustment or a different equipment configuration.
The Department of Cooperative Governance’s current local-government work also recognises the connection between maintenance capability, infrastructure planning, skills and service delivery. Practical improvements depend on decisions that can be executed and maintained locally.
